Two years later, in May of 1957, Bulova submitted the first of three separate rounds of prototypes for testing at the Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU). The watch link featured a special two-piece caseback, a thick brass anti-magnetic link case holder, and the manual 10 BPCHN movement with a unique clutch mechanism that prevented the link watch from being over-wound. Another small batch of prototypes were delivered in 1958 for field-testing by the Diving Unit and the Navy's UDT-21 frogman team.
Both iterations are limited to 300 pieces, and Aera continues with their phased release strategy, spreading out link the release of these units through this link year (100 pieces each) and then the rest in waves next year. While I don't have a behind-the-scenes look at the brand's sales performance, I think it's link a clever strategy to gauge demand through sales and produce accordingly.
